The narrator is working in his small office on the space station, checking lists of technical stores. Suddenly he hears a musical whistle right beside his ear. He assumes it came over the station intercom (the internal communication system) and waits for an announcement. None comes — instead, there is a "long and involved pattern of melody." 😔 Claribel is Found Lifeless

One morning (the crew works twelve-hour watches), the narrator wakes with a nagging headache and strange, fitful, disturbed dreams. He feels sluggish (slow, inactive) — as if he can't quite shake off sleep. At breakfast, one seat is vacant: Sven's. Someone explains: "He's looking for Claribel. Says he can't find her anywhere — she usually wakes him up."
Sven then walks in slowly, and everyone can see "something was wrong." He slowly opens his hand — and there lies a tiny bundle of yellow feathers, with two clenched claws sticking pathetically up into the air. Claribel is motionless. The entire crew is equally distressed.
Jock Duncan holds Claribel against his ear to detect a heartbeat. He shakes his head: "I can't hear anything — but that doesn't prove she's dead. I've never listened to a canary's heart." Someone suggests oxygen. They tuck Claribel into a face mask as an improvised oxygen tent. She revives immediately — hops onto Sven's finger, gives her cheerful series of trills — "Come to the cookhouse, boys!" — and then promptly keels over (collapses) again.

Jim comes back ten minutes later with a sheepish expression (embarrassed). It was "one of those accidents that couldn't possibly happen." The previous night, the station had one of its rare eclipses by Earth's shadow — the station passed behind Earth and was briefly out of direct sunlight. During this time, part of the air purifier had frozen up. The single alarm circuit that should have warned them had failed to go off. And the backup (second) alarm circuit wasn't connected yet.
Without Claribel, the crew would have slowly lost consciousness from oxygen deficiency — and might never have woken up. As the narrator puts it with dry humour: "Half a million dollars' worth of chemical and electronic engineering had let us down completely. Without Claribel, we should soon have been slightly dead."
The story ends with the narrator's advice: if you visit a space station and hear "an inexplicable snatch of birdsong" — don't be alarmed. On the contrary, be reassured. It means you are being "doubly safeguarded, at practically no extra expense."

⛏️ Why Miners Used Canaries

From the 1800s until as recently as 1986 in the UK, coal miners carried caged canaries into underground mines. This practice was based on a crucial scientific fact: canaries are far more sensitive to toxic gases (especially carbon monoxide, which is colourless and odourless) than humans. If the level of carbon monoxide or other dangerous gases rose to a risky level, the canary would faint or die first — giving miners precious time to evacuate before they were affected.

This is exactly what happens in the story: Claribel faints from oxygen deficiency before any human crew member notices anything wrong. The same principle that saved miners for two centuries also saved a space crew.

भाग 1 — क्लारीबेल का आगमन
