Malthus suggested two kinds of checks.

Preventive checks:
These are the steps people take on their own to limit family size. Malthus recommended sexual abstinence and postponement of marriage. He called these 'moral restraint'.
Positive checks:
If preventive checks fail, nature itself reduces the population through famines, epidemics, wars and other disasters. Malthus called these natural checks, since they restore the balance between population and food supply.
