Government Holkar (Model, Autonomous) Science College, commonly known as Holkar Science College, is a government autonomous college in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. It was founded on 10 June 1891 by Maharaja Shivaji Rao Holkar, the ruler of the erstwhile Indore State, who appointed Mr. E. C. Cholmondeley, an Oxford graduate and Bar-at-law, as its first Principal. The college was initially affiliated to Calcutta University, moved to Allahabad University in 1904, and is today affiliated to Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya, Indore. The Government of Madhya Pradesh designated it a Model College in 1985 and the UGC granted it autonomous status at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the late 1980s; it was further recognised as a Centre for Excellence by the state government in 2001-02. The campus at Bhawarkuan on A.B. Road covers about 34 acres. It is the largest government science institute in Madhya Pradesh and offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes with an emphasis on scientific research.
